Epiphany Liturgy on Jan 5 at 6pm at St. Paul’s

We will join with St. Paul’s Orthodox Church (get map) on the Eve of Epiphany on January 5, 2012, for Divine Liturgy and the blessing of the waters. Liturgy begins at 6pm.

We will also do the shorter blessing of the waters this Sunday following Divine Liturgy at our usual place of worship at the Holiday Inn (get map).

Bible Study begins Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm

Our bible study resumes Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm at the home of John and Frieda Hansen (get map).

We will continue with the book of John where we left off in the spring. The studies are open to everyone and held every other week. They were well attended last year and you are invited. We will hold them every other week. We pick up at John 14.

St. Peter’s sends $25 each month to Michael Pegadus, missionary in Tanzania. Barbara Zeena made the first donation on the month of her birthday. The Copelands, Jarvis and Long Families have made a donation through October — all to mark the month on their birthdays. If you would like to give a donation to help it would greatly be appreciated.

$25 might not seem like much, but it goes a long way in Tanzania and Michael his sent us his gratitude for our support. You can keep up with Michael on his blog at the Orthodox Christian Mission Center.

Monthy Pot-Luck Fellowship – Sign up now

Our fledgling parish wants more fellowship so we decided to start holding monthly pot-luck dinners where we can spend time together and get to know each other better.

Our first will be hosted by Bob and Mary Jarvis (get map) on Saturday, October 29 starting at 4pm. The theme is Italian. Please sign up at church to bring an appetizer, entree, salad, bread, or dessert or contact us through the website. Please put number of individuals that will be attending. If we get too many breads and desserts we will call to ask you to make something else.

We may need you to bring something to drink. We will provide water, coffee and tea. If children will be coming with parents let us know so we can have some juice.

Co-Chairs Mary Houlares Copeland and Mary Jarvis would like to thank all that gave of their time and donations for the 1st White Elephant Sale for our parish. It was a tremendous success. We made $1,100 for St Peter’s Mission Church. A special thanks to Robert Jarvis and Bill Copeland for helping set up, take down and deliver the goods to these organizations.

We were able to help 4 other local charities as well, NAMI, National Alliance for Mental Illness, that services individuals from Lee and Collier county, The Lions Club of Bonita Springs, Dress For Success, this organization helps women re-enter the work force that need help with clothing and training for interviews, and the senior center, Carlisle of Naples, took the books and puzzle that were left. We feel very good about giving back to our community in some small way by donating the remaining goods given to us.

“The Monks of Mt. Athos” Featured on 60 Minutes

This Sunday, on Pascha, CBS is airing a program on the Orthodox monasteries and monks of Mt. Athos! Don’t miss this important program!

NEW YORK, NY [GOARCH] – The Holy Mountain Athos, which for over 1000 years has been a sanctuary of Orthodox Christian monasticism, and which is directly under the spiritual jurisdiction of His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, will be featured on the CBS News program “60 Minutes”, scheduled to air on Pascha Sunday.

The segment, “The Monks of Mount Athos,” will recount 60 Minutes Correspondent Bob Simon’s journey to a remote peninsula in North Greece that millions of Orthodox Christians consider the most sacred place on earth, Mount Athos.

On the recommendation and with the blessing of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, doors were opened for the 60 Minutes team. After two trips to the mountain and two years of dialogue with the Anthonite community, Simon and the 60 Minutes team were given unprecedented access to document monastic life on the Holy Mountain. The result is a portrait of a place rarely seen, where prayer has been offered by holy men everyday, with no interruption, for more than a thousand years.

The “Monks of Mount Athos” will be broadcast Sunday, April 24, 2011 on the CBS Television Network at 7:00 PM EST. Harry Radliffe and Michael Karzis are the producers of the segment.

60 Minutes is the pre-eminent investigative television news show in the United States and has run on CBS since 1968. It has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life and has garnered numerous awards over the years.

The show will also be broadcast over the Internet at www.60minutes.com.
